S3.1.4 Express emotion in response to questions

Hi and welcome to Unit 1 Tier 3 Activity 1. Please follow the button below for the next part of the activity.

This activity involves using tones to give emotional responses to questions.

Responding with emotion often involves changing the language you use but also the tone. In this we will try to change tones of our responses to express an emotion. Try to match the speakers tones below.

Prompt

Why are you so shy?

Response – neutral

I’m only a little shy

Response – sad

No one sees me anyway

Response – excited

I’m not shy

Response – angry

I’m not shy, I’m angry

Tones in English can change meaning of a phrase. The examples above show some of the features. Note that sometimes the tone of a speaker will not match the words – this can indicate sarcasm or irony.

neutral – flat level tone

Sad – falling tone

Happy – high level tone

Angry – rising tone low to high with increase in volume or slow low tone

Excited – rising tone medium to high tone

Try the first verse and prechorus lines using different emotions in your tone.
