Activity 1
Using question tones with song lines

S3.1.2 Using question tones with song lines

Hi and welcome to Unit 1 Tier 3 Activity 1. Please follow the button below for the next part of the activity.

This activity involves using tones to give emotional responses to questions.

In English the tone of an entire phrase can raise at the end to form a question. This can make almost any phrase a question. Often a single word may be said with a rising pitch that turns it into a question.

In Mandarin this would be the equivalent of adding ma to the end of a sentence.

A simple way to show this is using hello. If you can see someone you would say hello with a flat pitch.

If you were looking for someone and you can’t see them you could use hello as a question to ask if anyone is there.

Try some common questions to practice using a rising tone.

Q: Are you ok?

Q: Is something wrong?

Q: Where is it?

We will use the rising question tone to change some of the lyrics into questions. Try the following lines.

I heard, that you’re settled down?
That you found a girl and you’re, married now?
I heard, that your dreams came true?
I guess she gave you things?
Why are you so shy?
Hide from the light?
