Lyrics

I heard that you’re settled down

That you found a girl and you’re married now.

I heard that your dreams came true.

Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you.

Old friend, why are you so shy?

Ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light.

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited

But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it.

I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded

That for me it isn’t over.

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you

I wish nothing but the best for you too

Don’t forget me, I beg

I’ll remember you said,

“Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead,

Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead”

You know how the time flies

Only yesterday was the time of our lives

We were born and raised

In a summer haze

Bound by the surprise of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited

But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it.

I’d hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded

That for me it isn’t over.

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you

I wish nothing but the best for you two

Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said

Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead, yeah

Nothing compares

No worries or cares

Regrets and mistakes

They are memories made.

Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you

I wish nothing but the best for you

Don’t forget me, I beg

I’ll remember you said,

“Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead”.

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you

I wish nothing but the best for you too

Don’t forget me, I beg

I’ll remember you said,

“Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead,

Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.”

Insights

What is the song about?

From: www.americansongwriter.com

Insight

“Adele came to the session with lyrics and melody for the first half of the verse at least – there was a real vibe and idea already. She told me she wanted to write a song about her heartbreak…that was how she put it. She told me a little bit about the guy who broke up with her, and I think maybe part of my contribution was to help keep the song really simple and direct—very personal.” – Dan Wilson, co-writer

Who is Adele?

From: www.billboard.com

Insight

California-based singer/songwriter Jason Mraz makes laid-back, melodic pop with stylistic nods toward folk, jam band music, hip-hop, and soft rock. Since coming to the public’s attention with his 2002 hit single “The Remedy (Don’t Worry)”, Mraz has proven himself to be a reliable pop craftsman whose crowd-pleasing melodies can encompass both cheeky humor and earnest sincerity.Billboard

Strange English?

What are these strange words?

Language twists

Common sayings of a culture are very hard to define and understand without some implicit knowledge. Implicit knowledge is common sense that exists outside of established rules and conventions. Out of the blue is an example used in this song. The semantic meaning of this makes no sense though, in a pragmatic sense, out of the blue means appearing without notice. There is no simple way to learn these sayings as they a different throughout the world in different cultures. When learning songs try to identify when something makes no literal sense and check ‘is it a common saying?’. Try using out of the blue in a speaking context such as ‘my parents turned up out of the blue last thursday’.
