How New Style Teaching Works
New Style Teaching’s approach to English learning is designed around students being able to learn at different levels in the same class. Advanced learners can focus on the context (pragmatics) of a song while intermediate students can work on phrases (semantics). Students guide their own learning within a song, finding the parts they enjoy then develop their speaking skills to use the language from the song. All students will work on the sounds of the words (phonetics) using the syllable structure that is common to western music. Western music generally uses syllables in time with beats in a song. This should help you sound out words using a singing voice then use the same syllable structure in a speaking voice. It must be noted that this method has not been tested yet and has no verifiable proof to its effectiveness – this will be researched in a future study.
Our method is designed to be used in both groups and alone with group classes being revised with individual and group work outside of class. It is hoped that we will develop an experience were students enjoy learning inside and outside of the classroom.
At this stage of the program’s development we are looking for how students respond to a new method of teaching. Do Taiwanese students find this new method fun and engaging? What about it do you enjoy or not enjoy? It must be stressed that this study is not a reflection on the teacher but the style of teaching. At any point of this study a participant can withdraw without any prejudiced from University of Queensland and National Taiwan University. We respect the honesty of participants and hope to develop a new method of teaching based on scientific evidence.
